The Dunnock Chicks and nest survived a hedge cut from the other side.

June 29, 2013 in sightings

The chicks survived a hedge cut from the other side of the hedge:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Carrion crow x 3
  4. Dunnock x 2 – Have heard the chicks, but my neighbours were cutting the hedge on the other side and I’m worried that it spooked the adults – 14.33. Will check later to the day. 4pm, saw 2 adults and heard them feeding young, all is good!
  5. Magpie x 3 – I noticed a gull circling the tree with the magpies in it, not sure what sort of gull, but the magpies were really putting up alarm calls.
  6. Woodpigeon x 3

Wow the rugby today, now that was an edge of the seat match!  The first 60 minutes of Rugby were rubbish, far too much stopping and starting, then finally a bit of action, but sadly it wasn’t like last week with a bit more entertaining play.  Wow George North is one big bloke though!

A brief walk and a bird I’ve not seen in a while.

June 28, 2013 in sightings

Made it for another walk today, was very happy with that, probably won’t be happening again tomorrow as my ankle was popping out of place this evening from doing too much and is very painful, so frustrating!  Seems generally one day on, one day off is the best for me, I will get there though and I can’t wait!!! It was another very wet day today and there must’ve been some birds about as they ate a lot of seed and two coconut halves filled with fat!  I was shocked, it”d been a while since they got through that much food.

Birds from Garden:

  1. Dunnock x 2
  2. Greenfinch x 1 – first in a long time.
  3. Magpie x 1
  4. Woodpigeon x 2

Birds from the walk:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Carrion crow x 1
  3. Robin x 1

I hope the Rugby goes well and the right team win tomorrow, 😉 It’s a tough one for me, born in NZ, spent most of my childhood in Oz and have been in the UK for 9 years.  My mate Mick will be blogging about it over on his newley setup blog: www.mickskehan.com still a bit of a mess and no real format to it, but that’s my fault!  I’ve been too busy, but figured it’d help him out a bit.  Hope to make it pretty soon, same goes with this website!  Just not enough hours in the day!

June 27, 2013 in sightings

  2. Woodpigeons x 2

from walk:

  1. Carrion Crow x 1
  2. Robin x 1

Spent a bit of time in the garden while it was sunny.

June 26, 2013 in sightings

Just a quick one today, another hectic day, was doing work sitting outside with the laptop and it was great to see the birds so close:

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 4 and I’m sitting outside working and can hear the chicks chirping away
  5. Magpie x 1
  6. Woodpigeon x 2

this was on my facebook page today:

Stuart Mabbutt Gardening Ltd (wildlife gardening specialists) – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stuart-Mabbutt-Gardening-Ltd-wildlife-gardening-specialists/165973946852868 Ian Brown has posted a fantastic idea, lets make it happen.

This might interest you. A post which was on my timeline – Next year is the Commemoration of the outbreak of WWI and I just thought to myself, what a good idea if everyone bought a packet of Poppy seeds (or 2) from B&Q or wherever and scattered them in random places, ie: hedgerows, traffic roundabouts, empty back garden borders, planters etc. (not somewhere that is mown or tended to regularly by the Commissioners, for example. Then, this time next year, when they flower, we would all be looking at Poppy’s in remembrance of those who fell during the 1914-1918 War. ‘Like’ this comment but , more importantly, SHARE it as I’d love it to go Global with this and get the whole planet involved in ‘Plant A Poppy Day’ – My comment – Ian Brown – Poppy seeds need to be on the surface of bare soil to germinate. It would be no good scattering the seed where vegetation is growing. Plough almost any area of the countryside, leave the area bare, and poppies will grow. This is much the same as what happened after the end of WWI or what happens when areas are disturbed by road works, etc.

Not a lot extra, but swift, swallow and robin from the walk, and there is a dunnocks nest in the hedge, very happy with that!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 1 – was happy to see this one feeding on the ground under my feeder.
  5. Collared Dove x 2
  6. Dunnock x 3 – and can hear the chirping of a nest in the hedge.
  7. Magpie x 2
  8. Woodpigeon x 2

Birds from the walk:

  1. Robin
  2. Swallow
  3. Swift

sorry not been on Twitter much, or writing long messages on here I have to put all my online time into www.saverscene.com.au as Australia is having a mega sale at the moment and trying to keep up with all the bargains. There’s a lot of them, the carpal tunnel is holding.

Could be a new Dunnock nest in the garden.

June 24, 2013 in sightings

Pretty sure there’s a new dunnock’s nest in the hedge, a bit further along than the last one, a lot of chirping coming from it today, the hedge has grown so thick since it’s last cutting I can’t see into it any more so can’t be 100% sure.

Birds from the garden today:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Collared Dove x 2
  4. Dunnock x 3 – heard noises of what sounds to be another nest further in the hedge!
  5. Magpie x 2 – they seemed to be trying to raid the blackbirds nest again, the blackbirds haven’t had much luck!
  6. Woodpigeon x 2

I also had a trip to the hospital for a check up on my carpal tunnel, I was told sadly that the two operations haven’t had any effect, I could tell them that, they said they wanted to put me back in for follow up surgery on both hands, however later in the day I got a call and they said they want to try me with some sort of hand therapy, I didn’t get this last time, so quite keen to see if it’ll heal the hands without the surgery as the second time, I’ve been told, is much more invasive and further up the arm.

On the way to hospital:

  1. Carrion Crow
  2. Starlings

Not a lot around, but did see a Blue tit chick being fed!

June 22, 2013 in sightings

A very poor list today, a lot of rain kept me inside almost all day, I did get to see a blue tit chick being fed, it was also foraging for food itself, it was no more than 10 meters away from the nest box, hopefully it was one of the ones from our garden.

The birds today:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 2 – young being fed
  3. Dunnock x 2
  4. Woodpigeon x 2

interesting blackbird this morning

June 22, 2013 in sightings

Saw a female blackbird this morning that has a number of white feathers on its head and neck – it was collecting food on a grassy roundabout so i guess it has young to feed. Interesting to see the colouring
