Garden Bird list August 31st, best for a while.

August 31, 2013 in sightings

Had a good day in the garden today, it was sunny but very very windy here in Edinburgh and a lot worse tonight, just in from being out with the dog.  Due to the wind it wasn’t a day for sitting in the garden, instead I stayed busy dead heading a buddleia in the hope it’d extend the flowering season and making an insect house out of some off cuts of wood and a lot of prunings from plants around the garden.  With the strong winds insects must’ve been getting blown all over the place as the feeders were busy, also wondering if my winter birds are back as this was the first blackbird I’d seen in over 3 weeks!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 1
  5. Dunnock x 4
  6. Great Tit x 1
  7. Greenfinch x 1
  8. Magpie x 2
  9. Woodpigeon x 1

Garden Bird List for August 28th. Swallows still around

August 28, 2013 in sightings

Another very small list for today, I was in the garden a bit and very little about.  I had forgot to mention there was a bat on Tuesday night flying over and taking a few moths.  Now if only it ate all the insects that love to bite my wife and dog I’d be very happy!

Garden Bird List for August 28th:

  1. Blue Tit x 2
  2. Dunnock x 2
  3. Magpie x 1
  4. Swallows x 2 – surprised to see them still around, will keep an eye out next year to see if it’s the same.
  5. Woodpigeon x 2

Sunday 25th – Osprey!!

August 28, 2013 in sightings

Went to Lackford Lakes in Suffolk for a few hours

Mallard, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Woodpigeon, Dunnock, Moorhen, Swallow, Mute Swan, Coot, Egyptian Goose, Great Crested Grebe, Cromorant, Black Headed Gull, Lapwing, Carrion Crow, Canada Goose Shoveler,  Tufted Duck, Teal, Long Tailed Tit, Greenfinch, Kesyrel, Magpie, Pochard, Grey Heron, Little Grebe – including one on a nest

Also 2 Osprey – possibly a pair.

I was watching one lake from a hide – everything was quiet with B.H Gull, Laping , Mallard, Tufted Duck cruising slowly about and feeding

Suddenly uproar as everything took off or flapped over the water.

Realised something was about and looked up just in time to see 2 Osprey passing over head which was the cause of the sudden movement.

Real nice to see as this was the best views I have had o Osprey

Took a trip up to Sheringham for the North Norfolk Steam railway – also took my new scope as i was planning to spend some time on a small hill watching the trains so decided to check the birds as well.

Overall got a reasonable list again

Very small garden bird list for August 26th

August 26, 2013 in sightings

I was outside a fair bit today as it was nice and sunny, however the amount of flies around surprised me, however looking at how few birds there are in my garden I can see why there’s so many flies and insects, I don’t get affected by their bites but my wife and dog couldn’t stand it!

  1. Dunnock x 2
  2. Magpie x 1
  3. Woodpigeon x 2
