A lot of driving and time spent in hospitals meaning few birds.

September 30, 2013 in sightings

At 2 different hospitals today and that pretty much took all of the sunlight hours and a bit of driving around between hospitals, meaning no time in the garden, but these are the birds I saw on the way to or from the hospital:

  1. Carrion crow x Seen
  2. Collared Dove x 1
  3. Jackdaw x Seen
  4. Magpie x Seen
  5. Rook – Seen
  6. Woodpigeon x Seen

Sadly with all that driving time there wasn’t any helpful answers and I’m to come back again at the start of February 2014!  My wife does all the driving and we were glad to see prices of petrol had come down in the Edinburgh region, but we always try to save money where we can and follow the tips on this thread: http://www.saverscene.com.au/money-saving-tips/12221-money-saving-tips-while-driving-help-you-save-fuel.html about reducing fuel costs, which you need to if you’re going from hospital to hospital or hopefully when I’m better out to hides and birdwatching all over the country.

Garden birds for September 29th 2013, Magpie kills and takes Blackbird chick.

September 29, 2013 in sightings

Today whilst sitting down in the living room working on thinking up more money saving tips to add to: http://www.saverscene.com.au/money-saving-tips/7345-lets-try-name-1000-money-saving-hints-8.html I noticed feathers floating across our front garden, very worried the cat was back I went looking for it, I took off outside to see what was happening, looking up I saw what I thought was the thick, stumpy bushiness of a cats tail, then it moved up the tree fast, and I realised it was actually the tail of a Magpie, in it’s beak was a blackbird chick.  I wasn’t happy, with the amount of fat the Magpies take and there was plenty in the garden at the time I’d hoped they’d not need to resort to taking other birds chicks… However I was happy that it wasn’t a cat and that the chick would be eaten rather than killed and left lying in my garden as the cats do FAR too often!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Carrion crow x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 2
  5. House Sparrow x 5
  6. Magpie x 1 – Sadly stealing a blackbird chick from the nest
  7. Woodpigeon x 2

27th of September – Cat back and blackbird did not like it!

September 27, 2013 in sightings

The cat was back and the blackbird did not like it, I had to send Chewie my dog out to scare the cat off as it wouldn’t leave the poor blackbird alone which is just hiding, minding it’s own business in the hedge while it malts!  Very few birds, they’ve all gone to hiding of late.

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Dunnock x 1
  3. Woodpigeon x 2

A very grey day in Edinburgh and very few birds.

September 25, 2013 in sightings

It was my birthday today and it rained almost the entire day, we went to Edinburgh Botanics, but stayed in the restaurant there and only saw a few birds, although there was a large flock of geese overhead, I’d guess they were pink footed geese flying towards Aberlady Bay, however I can’t be sure.

  1. Carrion crow x Seen
  2. Dunnock x 1 – garden
  3. Jackdaw x 2 – garden
  4. Magpie x Seen
  5. Woodpigeon x Seen

Bad weather puts a few more birds into the garden.

September 24, 2013 in sightings

Had a bit of a better day in the garden, I think the poor weather here in Edinburgh forced the birds to the garden, including 2 bullfinches that were looking exhausted, hoping they got a good feed, it’s the first bullfinch in a month, very happy to see them around along with the other birds:

  1. Blue Tit x 3
  2. Bullfinch x 2
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 1
  5. Great Tit x 1
  6. House Sparrow x 1
  7. Woodpigeon x 1

Managed a short walk today and had 2 Robins singing.

September 23, 2013 in sightings

Went for a short walk with Chewie my dog, but sadly all thoughts of birds went out of my head when I kicked a tennis ball and sadly didn’t get the lift it normally does and hit Chewie straight in the face, knocking a tooth out.  Sadly he’d already lost 2 bottom teeth before chasing a ball when I was more able and going up Arthur’s Seat where there were low lying rocks.  I felt so bad, we took him to the vet and had him checked over, nice clean wound and nothing to worry about, but the rest of the day was spent on the sofa together me sore from the extra walking to the vet and Chewie sore and feeling very ill from the teeth problems and a trip to the vet.

Here’s my list after all the dram for today:

  1. Blue Tit x 1
  2. Carrion crow x – a few on a walk
  3. Dunnock x 1
  4. Great Tit x – there seemed to be a few also on the walk to st margaret’s park corstorphine
  5. Robin x 2 – one in each neighbours garden to either side of mine. We don’t have any decent height trees yet in our garden so they sing from the top of our neighbours.

September 21, 2013 in sightings

Sadly a cat got a bird in the garden, I’ve moved my feeders as I found the cat’s hiding spot under a dogwood, the ground was all pressed down and the cat had obviously been there in wait for a while.  Hoping new location makes it safe for the birds, not a lot in the garden today:

  1. Blue Tit x 1
  2. Carrion crow x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 1
  5. House Sparrow x 1
  6. Woodpigeon x 1
