Autumnwatch is back, interview with David Attenbourgh and very small bird list.

October 31, 2013 in sightings

As one of my money saving techniques for the UK was to give up my TV licence I hadn’t realised that Autumnwatch was back on our screens, I feel it’s one of the best shows around and a reason to pay your TV licence if you can afford it, if like me you can’t and you want to see the shows you are allowed to watch them on catch up.  They can be seen through the BBC iplayer and the Autumnwatch homepage. I spent the morning working on parts of Saver Scene Australia due to my feet being terrible and not being able to get outside I spent the afternoon catching up on the 2 shows and unsprung that I’d missed as well as an interview with Sir David Attenbourough from the Fauna & Flora International’s 100th Anniversary.

My bird list is very lacking today due to the time spent working and watching TV, just what I could see from my sofa and what I heard when I woke up:

  1. Bullfinch x 1 – beautiful male.
  2. Magpie x heard only
  3. Woodpigeon x 1

Not a great day but I did get a few good birds that I am happy to see in the garden, the bullfinch and greenfinch, superb birds that are quite regular garden visitors, really love them!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Bullfinch x 1 – the male was really bright in the sun. Brilliant to see!
  4. Greenfinch x 1

Woken by a bird song I didn’t know, but couldn’t get a fix on the bird.

October 28, 2013 in sightings

Another blustery day and very few birds around. I was awoken by a bird call I don’t know, I’d say a warbler of some sort, but I’m not sure.  I scanned my garden for it but couldn’t fix it and then it was gone.  A real shame would have been nice to add a different bird to my list.

List today is:

  1. Carrion crow x 2
  2. Dunnock x 1 – been a few days.
  3. House Sparrow x 6
  4. Magpie x 1
  5. Starlings x 1 – It was getting blown all over the place and looked as if it was trying to fly in formation, it looked like a solo drunk man trying to start a mosh!
  6. Woodpigeon x 1

A bit of wind from St Jude Storm gets felt by the starlings.

October 27, 2013 in sightings

As St Jude storm (not sure why it’s called that, other than the feast of the 28th is St Jude’s and numerous other saints day) hits the south of the UK it’s not been too bad a day until just near dusk, but that said there were few birds around today and the starlings were really getting blown around:

  1. Carrion crow x 2
  2. Common Buzzard x 1 – getting mobbed by other birds, was very bright and couldn’t work out what the other birds were.
  3. House Sparrow x 5
  4. Starlings x 15 approx, getting blown about in the heavy winds.

Camera gear’s got mould on it. Very few birds.

October 25, 2013 in sightings

Another day with very few birds, but that was because I spent it cleaning a room as I found my camera gear and some computer gear had got mould on them due to lack of use after my injury, I’ve had a de-humidifier running almost 24/7 since the start of October and I thought I’d be safe from mould and have all my work gear protected.  I was wrong!  I will be back at it tomorrow, but hope for a few more birds.

  1. Carrion crow x 1
  2. Woodpigeon x 2

Flocks of Carrion fly over at dusk, garden bird list October 24th.

October 24, 2013 in sightings

Just after dusk flocks of carrion birds flew across the sky anywhere between 50 and 100, however I couldn’t tell which type they were, there were a few different sizes so I’d guess Carrion Crow and Jackdaw but not 100% sure, here’s my list for today:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Carrion crow x 1
  3. Dunnock x 2
  4. House Sparrow x 6
  5. Robin – heard only.
  6. Starlings x – I could hear them but couldn’t see them, think they’d gone to roost and were just making noise, a few minutes late to see their flying display
  7. Woodpigeon x 2

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Carrion crow – W
  4. Common Buzzard – W – flying very low over the roof tops.
  5. Dunnock x 1
  6. House Sparrow x 3
  7. Jackdaw – W
  8. Magpie – W
  9. Robin x 1 – like the last couple of days I could hear more.
  10. Starlings x 35 apprxo.
  11. Woodpigeon x 2

Pulled up a few spuds from my home grown potatoes today, very happy with them eating them for dinner tonight.  Growing my own is part of my money saving drive, which is going ok, garden not as great as I’d hoped.  I have a lot of salad pick and grow leaves, and a few tomatoes. If you have any tips feel free to add them to this thread: – I’ve linked to page 8 as it has my favourite – Tip #74 – makes me laugh, surely the shower would take longer!!!
