Lack of bird watching time due to Uni work.

November 30, 2013 in sightings

Can’t believe how quickly this year has gone by, then again it seems like forever since my parents were here…  Might have seemed quick as this is the first year since 2009 I’ve not had an operation!  Although the ones I have had during 2009 – 2012 none have seemed to work, very frustrating!

Last day of November, sadly didn’t get a great chance to watch birds today, catching up on Uni work, studying finance after not being able to go back into landscape photography I had to think of something I can currently do sitting down.  It’s not as exciting as photography but I do like helping people find ways to save money if I can and it’s become very important to me as my income has dwindled to pretty much nothing since my accident back in 2008.  I have always been self employed and ran a money saving website back in 1997-1998 whilst at uni (Photography/arts) about where to get the cheapest drinks / eat out and went on to do a lot of other money saving things until the free host I was using closed down.

Now I’ve had a rant again on to the birds!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. House Sparrow x 5
  4. Magpie x 1
  5. Robin x 1
  6. Woodpigeon x 2

I looked out for starlings at dusk but didn’t see any.

The starlings are putting on great shows with a backdrop of amazing sunsets!

I tried another walk yesterday needed to pick up a prescription from the doctors office, however made it there my ankle wouldn’t get me back, had to get my wife to walk home and get the car to pick me up.  A little frustrating!  Sadly was concentrating on my walking too much to notice the birds.

  1. Blackbird x heard only
  2. Carrion crow x 1
  3. Dunnock x 1
  4. House Sparrow x 5
  5. Magpie x 3
  6. Robin x 1
  7. Starlings x 50+ a great sunset flight display
  8. Woodpigeon x 4

It was also black Friday for the shops, so I spent a lot of time getting a list of shops that have sales for Australia in this post: it took a long time and I know I’ve missed a lot of shops, but most of the sales are on offer up until Christmas, I really hope it’s a hand list of Aussie shops to help people save money.  It’s been good for me as I’m in the UK and it makes it cheaper to send presents to Oz by using their online store.

  2. House Sparrow x 5 – but heard a lot more
  3. Magpie x 3

A frosty morning but strangely few birds.

November 25, 2013 in sightings

A very frosty day and I was expecting a lot more birds in the garden, we did have a fox at 14.15 which was very cool to see, but it’s very small, smaller than most of the cats that prowl the garden.  It was collecting the dropped fat from the bird feeders, I love seeing foxes!

  1. Blue Tit x 1
  2. Carrion crow x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 2
  4. Dunnock x 1
  5. House Sparrow x 2
  6. Magpie x 1
  7. Starlings x heard only
  8. Woodpigeon x 8

Make sure you keep water out for the birds and other wildlife.

Greater Spotted Woodpecker makes a quick visit and no House Sparrows.

November 24, 2013 in sightings

Today was a much better day for birds in my garden!  I popped out to watch the rugby NZ v Ireland at a friends house as I don’t have a TV, one of my money saving initiatives whilst I’m injured and unable to do my normal work.  But even before the match (what a match!) I managed to get a great list, including a GSW and strangely no sparrows.  I know they were about, I’m 90% sure they were what I could hear chirping from a few gardens away, they just didn’t show in my garden.

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Bullfinch x 1
  4. Carrion crow x 1
  5. Coal Tit x 1
  6. Dunnock x 1
  7. Great Tit x 1
  8. Greater Spotted Woodpecker x 1
  9. Greenfinch x 1
  10. Magpie x 3
  11. Robin x 1
  12. Woodpigeon x 5

May have seen fieldfare, redwing or song thrush.

November 21, 2013 in sightings

Sadly didn’t have my bins with me, but 5 birds about the size of redwing flew past yesterday, they were in the distance and I couldn’t get an accurate size on them.  Definitely bigger than blackbirds and smaller than woodpigeons, I won’t list them as didn’t get an accurate ID, just glad to know they’re about.

I managed a short walk to a park in Corstorphine Edinburgh, that’s where the birds I’m pretty sure were redwing.  I can’t walk at all tonight, but nice to get out, as we had our first flurry of snow and once the ground gets icy that’s me pretty much stuck at home.

W = W
G = Garden

Blackbird x 5+ W
Blue Tit x 3 G
Carrion crow x 1 G + W
Dunnock x 1 G
House Sparrow x 20+ G + W
Jackdaw x 2 W
Magpie x 2 G + W
Woodpigeon x 2 G + 5+ W
