Noticed a real change in birds over last few days.

March 20, 2014 in sightings

Lately the amounts of birds has dropped, the house sparrows are still around but the blackbirds seemed to have started to change I gather my northern birds have flown north and the summer blackbirds haven’t all arrived back yet.  I normally eat around 1 to 5 apples per day and throw the cores outside for the birds, the ones that are in the garden don’t seem to be taking the cores as readily as the ones here just a week ago and my garden is starting to get littered with apple cores!

Other notices big flocks of geese flying north, blue tits already starting in the nest box and a sparrowhawk patrolling the garden.  It was over twice today!

Sadly not had a lot of time for watching birds or doing anything fun with my camera, hands are still terrible and I’ve been getting kept busy with the ISA updates especially with the announcements of changes in the 2014 Budget there’s a bit more about all that stuff here:

Hopefully get to the Scottish Birdfair on both days this year and be birding again in the very near future!  Sadly had to let my RSPB membership lapse due to lack of funds so it’ll have to be at free hides and waterfronts when I do get back to it.

Dunnocks carrying food already and Starling roost outside our window!

March 12, 2014 in sightings

I’m pretty sure I saw a dunnock carrying food to it’s young.

We’ve also got about 20 starlings roosting outside our window after the magpies kicked them out of their regular roost in the monkey puzzle tree.  I haven’t had a chance to have a good count but it does seem like a smaller flock than the one that had been roosting in the monkey puzzle tree. Wonder where the others went?

Today I’ve just finished putting up new nestboxes, there’s now a total of 5 different RSPB nest boxes in my garden, 2 x Open front boxes for Robins: http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/birds-wildlife/nestboxes/apex-open-front-nestbox.html also good for wrens, pied wagtails and spotted flycatcher.

and I’ve got 2 Apex classic nest boxes: http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/birds-wildlife/nestboxes/apex-classic-nestbox.html actually it’s one of them and one of the painted ones which they don’t seem to sell any more.  The painted one has already seen a bit of pecking around it’s entrance and looks as if something’s been testing it out.

There’s also 1 Sparrow terrace: http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/birds-wildlife/nestboxes/rspb-sparrow-terrace-nestbox.html – a blue tit took up the centre nest hole last year and raised a few to fledging, a few sadly died and 1 egg was found when I cleaned the nest box out earlier this year.  I’m hoping that the blue tits take up the solitary boxes this year and leave the terrace for the house sparrows.  Will let you all know.

A guide to nest box locations can be found here: https://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/smallbirds/siting.aspx – I may have put one of the robin boxes a little high.

Once again hands are very sore and I’ve been hectic with other work, I’m sorry for lack of updates, hope to be back doing it soon.  Not seen anything very unusual, only 3 common buzzards yesterday on March 11th circling high and calling.  The rest has been the usual, house sparrows, blue, coal and great tits, dunnocks, magpies, woodpigeons and blackbirds.

Common Buzzard and first frog of the season!

March 6, 2014 in sightings

I’ve been out of bird seed for a bit had to wait until pay day to get some, but I’ve been putting out a lot more fatballs and half coconuts and the birds have started to eat them, even the blackbirds are getting up one the feeders, interestingly the females seem to be more interested.

Just wanted to add that I’ve seen a Common Buzzard today and as the rains came down tonight the first frog of spring.  Was hoping to have a pond ready, but my body just hasn’t been up to digging the heavy clay that we’ve got to add one.

Last 2 days

March 5, 2014 in sightings

Had similar sightings for the last 2 days following on from my monday list – only one thing extra was a Lesser black backed gull on Tuesday.

After all those Magpie’s on Monday i have counted them for yesterday and today and had 15 yesterday and 16 today so not so many as on Monday
