First Goldfinch I’ve seen in my garden! Chris Packham Springwatch BBC 50th?

May 28, 2014 in sightings

Not sure if the Blue Tit chicks have fledged I haven’t seen the adults going into the nest box for a few days and I’ve seen coal tit chicks about.  Last year was a lot colder and they were fledging roughly 2 weeks later – Blue tit fledge – but haven’t seen any evidence this year, although I’ve been in a lot more pain this year and can hardly walk so can’t get outside as often to check on things.

Here’s the garden list for the 28th of May 2014:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Dunnock x 2
  4. Goldfinch x 1 – first  that I’ve ever seen in this garden, first for the year! Also first I’ve seen since last years Scottish Birdfair
  5. House Sparrow x 1
  6. Jackdaw x 2
  7. Magpie x 1
  8. Starlings x 10+ many with chicks
  9. Woodpigeon x 3

Chris Packham’s TV show title list – that I noticed – I gathered it’s for the 50th birthday of BBC2

  1. Bottom
  2. Birds of a Feather
  3. Oasis
  4. Badger

Garden Bird list and Chris Packham Springwatch 2014 TV show list day 2

May 27, 2014 in sightings

I couldn’t get out of the room due to not being able to open the door as the pain in my hands were too much, I may have to take up the second operations for my carpal tunnel. It’s meant to only have a 50% chance of working, the first round that didn’t work is meant to have a 90 to 99% chance.  When I finally managed to get outside my ankle popped out of place sending me falling onto my wrists making things even worse!

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 1 – got a great view less than a metre away
  4. Dunnock x 2
  5. House Sparrow x 2
  6. Jackdaw x 1
  7. Magpie x 1
  8. Starlings x 4 fly over
  9. Woodpigeon x 3

Chris Packham Springwatch 2014 TV Show titles episode 2:

  1. 2point4 Children
  2. Morph
  3. The River
  4. One Foot in the Grave
  5. The Grand
  6. Update: Gimme, Gimme, Gimme – never heard of this one
  7. Update: ‘Allo, ‘Allo – Don’t know how I missed this!

Giant Thunderstorms and a big soaking, dead starling chick.

May 25, 2014 in sightings

Walked outside this morning to find a decapitated starling at our back-door. My dog Chewie sniffed at it, looked at me and just lost his sense of play, not sure if it was something I was giving off or he has empathy. Not sure if it was the sparrowhawk, cat or a fox… The fox does often leave treats in our garden for Chewie. It brings from other gardens things like other dog’s toys, balls, torn up shoes. A kookaburra I used to feed meat to in Australia would knock on my back window and leave decapitated mice, frogs or lizards for me on a regular basis. I wonder if the fox is returning the favour in the same way due to us putting a small amount of Chewie’s food out for the fox most nights?

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 2 – 1 was a chick. Very cute!
  5. Dunnock x 1
  6. House Sparrow x 2
  7. Magpie x 1
  8. Starlings x heard only, wondering if they’re staying away.
  9. Woodpigeon x 3

Edinburgh Farmers Markets and Starlings take over garden.

May 24, 2014 in sightings

Today went to the Edinburgh Farmers Markets just below Edinburgh Castle and unlike “The Armstrong and Millers Show – The Farmers Markets Song” – the organic fruit was actually cheaper than the mass produced flavourless fruit I’ve been getting at Tesco of late – Sainsbury’s have been good but aren’t within walking distance.  It did mean I got to see a few extra birds!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1 – Worried the Starlings are forcing them out of the garden, they do seem to get a lot of food from my neighbours giant hawthorn tree, it’s beautiful!
  3. Bullfinch x 1 – Near Edinburgh Zoo on way home from Farmer’s Markets.
  4. Carrion crow x 1
  5. Chaffinch x 1 – at Farmer’s Markets
  6. Collared Dove x 1
  7. Common Buzzard x
  8. Dunnock x 3
  9. House Sparrow x 3
  10. Jackdaw x 2
  11. Magpie x 1
  12. Starlings x 25+
  13. Swallows x 1
  14. Woodpigeon x 3

Starlings in the garden! Deciding to go vegetarian!

May 23, 2014 in sightings

A better day for the bird list in my garden, the first time I’ve actually seen starlings land in the garden:

  1. Blackbird x heard only
  2. Blue Tit x 2 – both going into the nest box.
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 1
  5. Dunnock x 3
  6. Feral Pigeon x 1
  7. House Sparrow x 3
  8. Jackdaw x 2
  9. Magpie x 1
  10. Starlings x 4 – actually in the garden and not just flying over.
  11. Woodpigeon x 3

After yesterday’s startling fox incident I’ve finally decided to join my wife and become a vegetarian, actually she’s vegan, but not sure if I’m ready to give up cheese, I don’t drink milk and prefer dark non-dairy chocolate, so I am almost there!  I just can’t think of animals being harmed for my food!

As for the garden I’ve had bad luck with 3 plants from Suttons Seeds they were delivered a couple of days late and were so dry when they got to me I was worried about them, I soaked them in water, however my waterbutt isn’t quite ready and I had to use tap water and it was too strong it killed them.  I won’t be ordering plants over the internet again, just too much relies on the delivery company and if the weather’s hot.

Sadly didn’t get a great list today, inside and then everything went out of head.

May 22, 2014 in sightings

Bit of a shaky day, a car that must have been at least a few in front of us hit a fox, but we didn’t realise this and thought it was road kill, as we went over it it lifted it’s head hitting the underside of the car.  I went back to get it, closest safe place to park was about a mile away, I can’t walk very fast due to torn ankle tendons and they kept popping over my ankle bone causing major pain.  By the time I got back to the poor injured fox 20+ cars had been over / around it, I didn’t have much hope for the little guy.  I walked into the middle of the road stopping the traffic and scooped it up.  it just cuddled up in my arms and I walked back to the car in the very narrow verge as trucks and buses rushed passed.

We rang the SSPCA and I just sat there holding it for the next 15 or so minutes, sadly I don’t think it’s going to make it, it was in a bad state, pretty sure it had a broken back right leg and a head injury.  Saying that it was pretty with it, as soon as I put it down it did try to find shelter and hid under a bush for a while, I picked it up from there for the SSPCA lady to take it away.  I think she was surprised I’d managed to pick it up, but a fox generally knows if someone is calm and trying to do the best for it.  I’m so hopeful it makes it.

Then turned up at a http://www.bgateway.com/ meeting on Search Engine Optimisation covered in fox blood.  Not a great first impression for many people, but I explained and people were ok with a guy stinking of fox and covered in blood being in the room.

Thanks to the SSPCA!
Whilst in Musselburgh I once found a jackdaw in the gutter that looked as if it’d been hit by a car, I picked it up and put it in my jacket pocket and a couple stopped me to ask directions as I was chatting to them it jumped out, gave them a bit of a fright.  The bird was in a state it let me pick it up again and put it back in my pocket.  Once again SSPCA came to the rescue.
