RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Results

January 24, 2015 in sightings

I’ve just done the RSPB’s great garden bird watch and I ended up with a fantastic list, I tried to grab a shot of the Greater Spotted Woodpecker and due to tremors I got a lot of blur, I tried holding up the camera against the window and had a dystonia spasm which made a loud noise frightening it off – not being able to hold cameras for shots like this is why I became a landscape photographer, hopefully in the future camera speeds keep getting faster and I can follow my love of wildlife videography and photography. Most of the action happened in the first 20 minutes, no new birds added in last 20.

Don’t forget to submit results at RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

Here are my results, flyovers not submitted:

  1. Blackbird x 4 2xM, 2xF
  2. Black-headed Gull x 1 – flyover
  3. Blue Tit x 2
  4. Bullfinch x 2 1M, 1F
  5. Carrion crow x 1 – flyover not included in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
  6. Coal Tit x 2 – was worried none would show, then around 39 minutes the garden was quiet of birds and 2 showed.
  7. Dunnock x 1
  8. Feral Pigeon x 2
  9. Great Tit x 1
  10. Great Spotted Woodpecker x 1 – What a stunner for the Big Garden Birdwatch!
  11. House Sparrow x 14 with more in the hedge
  12. Jackdaw x 1 – flyover
  13. Magpie x 2 – flyover
  14. Robin x 2 – even had a fight it was an eventful hour!
  15. Woodpigeon x 1

My wildlife gardening must be working as compared to 2013 list: 2013 Big Garden Bird Watch and 2014 Big Garden Bird Watch – there were a few extras, but both 2013 and 2014 had Fieldfare which was missing this year.

RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch & BBC Winterwatch.

January 23, 2015 in sightings

What a great year for Winterwatch, probably the best series I’ve seen so far.  Really enjoyed it.  I can’t wait to get back out and see wildlife and get cracking with getting my pond set up for newts and frogs.

Do not forget the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

I am stuck in bed and sadly my room doesn’t look out the where my feeders are. I’ve set them to be outside my office as I work from home due to not always being able to get out of the house.  I will try and get to a place where I can see them and hopefully have a result for the birdwatch. For more information head to RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

I hope to be back able to update my bird list soon I’ve been playing around with voice recognition software, however I sometimes have trouble with speech (I can not say latin names at all!) and my tongue gets stuck, my first attempts with voice software can be seen here: Voice Recognition Software results.

Edinburgh A720 Bypass – Grey Heron and Common Buzzard

January 20, 2015 in sightings

I’ve recently been fully diagnosed with dystonia (I had a diagnosis about 13 years ago but didn’t care much as I could handle things in my early 20s) and it’s the reason I get spasms that tear tendons off bones and cause really bad carpal tunnel.  It means loads of trips to the hospital and whilst getting an MRI scan today to take my mind off things I was thinking about the birds I’d love to see in 2015 – 1: Crossbill – either Loxia curvirostra or Loxia scotica would be great, 2: Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus) and Crested tit (Lophophanes cristatus) – Marsh and Willow tits would also be a great sighting.  5 birds I’ve never seen before!

Today I did get to see 2 great birds, one you’d expect on roadsides and the other I was a little more surprised at:

  1. Common Buzzard x 1
  2. Grey Heron x 1

January 3, 2015 in sightings

I was in Switzerland in early December and for the first time ever i saw Nutcracker – in fact saw at least 5 – i could not get a decent photo but got to see them with Binoculars and also reasonably close – the location was near Morteratsch in the Engadine – saw 3 at well over 2000 metres when i was out walking and then one when i was waiting for a train – well it was at least one doing a circuit – might have been more – also saw one from the train

Nice to see these birds for the first time
