RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch & BBC Winterwatch.

January 23, 2015 in sightings

What a great year for Winterwatch, probably the best series I’ve seen so far.  Really enjoyed it.  I can’t wait to get back out and see wildlife and get cracking with getting my pond set up for newts and frogs.

Do not forget the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

I am stuck in bed and sadly my room doesn’t look out the where my feeders are. I’ve set them to be outside my office as I work from home due to not always being able to get out of the house.  I will try and get to a place where I can see them and hopefully have a result for the birdwatch. For more information head to RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

I hope to be back able to update my bird list soon I’ve been playing around with voice recognition software, however I sometimes have trouble with speech (I can not say latin names at all!) and my tongue gets stuck, my first attempts with voice software can be seen here: Voice Recognition Software results.

So hungover went back to bed! Very few birds.

April 16, 2013 in sightings

I had a shocker today, after a big night catching up with my Auntie and cousin, I got rather drunk, very very drunk and didn’t get enough sleep, so I went back to bed and all of a sudden it was dusk!

Birds I saw today:

  1. Blackbird – heard only
  2. Carrion Crow x 7 – flying over at dusk.

I did have dreams of starlings flocking to the garden, but that obviously doesn’t count!

Also for those interested there’s now a RSPB voucher code listed here: RSPB voucher code for free delivery.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch – Day 1.

January 26, 2013 in sightings

Hi all, I’ve been busy getting ready for Australia day celebrations and I only got an hour of straight birdwatching for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, normally I look out the window when getting lunch, breakfast etc.  I hope to get a better count tomorrow for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, today’s list wasn’t as full as my usual list of garden birds:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 2
  4. Fieldfare x 1 – this one was later than the hour I did, once again my dog alerted me to the fact there was a different bird that he doesn’t recognise the call.
  5. Greenfinch x 1
  6. House Sparrow x 2
  7. Magpie x 9
  8. Robin x 1

Very few birds today, getting ready for the RSPB hedge.

January 5, 2013 in sightings

There were very few birds in the garden today, but it maybe due to activity as my wife was helping, okay doing most of the work due to my injuries, digging over the area that the hedge is to go into, hope to take some photos of the rest of the project, forgot today.  It’s only about half done as she has to work Saturdays but it’s a start and it should be a few more days before the plants come.  If you are after a good mix for a hedge the RSPB have a good page: RSPB – Homes for Wildlife – Hedge of Glory it takes you to the Ashridge Trees website for their package of a bird friendly hedge: Ashbridge Bird Friendly Hedge – http://www.ashridgetrees.co.uk/RSPB-Bird-Friendly-Hedge-Mix – you can watch their video on how to plant a hedge:

  6. Dunnock x 3
  7. Herring Gull x 2 (fly over)

Get ready for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

January 3, 2013 in sightings

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is on again, I think this it’s 34th year, this will be the 7th year I’ve participated and the first at my new house.  There’s none of the Starlings, Goldfinches or the Nuthatches I’ve seen in previous gardens but still a nice range of birds and I hope to get a good list!

The Big Garden Birdwatch is over the weekend of 26th & 27th of January, I’ll probably do my count on 26th as that’s Australia Day and we’ve got a few mates dropping in for a few snags & beers that night, so may not have the earliest start on the 27th when most of the birds in my garden are active.

For more information and to register to take part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch head over to: The RSPB: Big Garden Birdwatch and register to make things easier for entering the details on the weekend, you have until the 15th of February to add your sightings.

Hope you all join in the fun of birdwatching and helping the RSPB with their garden birdwatch studies.
