Tawny Owl sounds across Corstorphine.

May 17, 2013 in sightings

Birds of May 16th 2013:

Sorry my post is a day late again, I was outside until 2am burning off the old garden waste again, I didn’t realise that some of the garden posts I’d been asked to burn off were hardwood.  Man they took forever to get to a size manageable for the small Tesco conversation pit I’ve been using!   Sadly the axe I purchased from Home Base is incredibly blunt, maybe how they have to sell them?  When I have time I’ll have to sharpen it, or at least take it to Mr Minute or the UK equivalent I think Timpson?

The one good thing about being out so late was the amount of times I heard the Tawny Owl.  Fantastic to hear!

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Blue Tit x 1 – going into the nest
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 3
  5. Magpie x 1
  6. Tawny Owl – heard only
  7. Woodpigeon x 2

Didn’t make it to the Scottish Birdfair today, tomorrow! 2 bird lists for my day.

May 11, 2013 in sightings

I didn’t get to the Scottish Birdfair today, however I really hope to go tomorrow, I’ve been following posts about it on Twitter (if you want to add me I’m ApteryxGav ) I’m no good on public transport at the moment, my ankle tendon clicks over the bone if I get jerked.  So not great when buses start and stop, especially if I can’t get a seat.  I’ve got two lists for today, the first is my garden bird list and second was a very gentle stroll around Corstorphine Edinburgh:

  1. Blackbird x 2, 1x, 1xf
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Coal Tit x 2
  4. Dunnock x 2
  5. Magpie x 1
  6. Tawny Owl – heard only
  7. Woodpigeon x 1

List from walking around Corstorphine, no counts just the species:

Blackbird
Blue Tit
Carrion crow
Chaffinch
Dunnock
Feral Pigeon
House Sparrow – heard only, and seems to be a lot of them just up the road from where I live, hope it’s the ones that decided to leave my garden after the sparrow hawk was a bit persistent.

Very small list today,a few photos of blackbirds with grubs.

May 8, 2013 in sightings

Considering I know there’s 2 nests in my garden and I watched them regularly from a distance today my bird list is very tiny, if it wasn’t for hearing a Twany Owl it’d be very short!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Carrion crow x 5 – flyovers
  4. Coal Tit x 2
  5. Dunnock x 3
  6. Tawny Owl – heard only
  7. Woodpigeon x 2

I was reading Wes’s post about breeding blackbirds and I’m hoping see the Blackbirds nesting in my garden bringing in food for it’s young, these photos were taken in a previous garden, never found where the birds were nesting though. think it was in a very dense holly bush.  Just hoping the ones survive where they’re nesting outside my bedroom window, low down, quite open and right above an area a neighbours cat likes to pass through.

Festival of the Spoken Nerd, Garden Bird list & night time visitor.

April 6, 2013 in sightings

This first entry was from last night on the way to an Edinburgh to see a Science Festival show – we went to see Festival of the Spoken Nerd and on the way there I spotted a common buzzard just near Murrayfield Stadium.  The show was excellent full of fun science ideas and a good amount of comedy.

  1. Common Buzzard – seen on side of road.

Today wasn’t a great day for birdwatching instead a lot more DIY and when not doing that trying to stay off my feet as my ankle tendons are popping out a little too often, all very frustrating!  On arriving home last night I took chewie out for a final visit to the garden and heard the wonderful call of a tawny owl.  Here’s my garden bird list for today:

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Carrion crow x 2 flying over
  4. Coal Tit x 1
  5. Dunnock x 3
  6. Long-tailed tit x 2 – they were around almost every time I was outside today.
  7. Magpie x 2
  8. Tawny Owl x 1 -heard only
  9. Woodpigeon x 4

Another new bird for the year, Song Thrush & Tawny Owl is back.

February 9, 2013 in sightings

My bird list isn’t as exciting as Wes’s (A good day at Rainham Marshes) but I have a new one for this years bird list and the Tawny Owl was back last night, there was also a Song Thrush in the front garden today, very happy with that!  There were roughly 20 geese flying east to west over the Pentland hills – photo of Pentland Hills, south of Edinburgh today, strangely they were flying in one straight line and not the that we’re all so familiar with, wasn’t sure what species of geese they were so haven’t added them to my list.

As well as the Dunnocks – Dunnocks showing mating behaviour, my garden bird list. – showing mating behaviour the other day, the two woodpigeons I saw today were also getting ready to nest, it has been a very mild winter here in Edinburgh.  Here’s my garden bird list that I saw today:

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Chaffinch x 3
  4. Coal Tit x 2
  5. Dunnock x 1
  6. House Sparrow x 3
  7. Magpie x 1
  8. Song Thrush x 1
  9. Tawny Owl x 1 – heard only
  10. Woodpigeon x 2

  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 2

Grey Heron and Tawny Owl show up on my list for first time this year.

February 2, 2013 in sightings

Just after midnight last night I heard a Tawny Owl, first I’ve heard since moving into my new place a bit further down Corstorphine Hill than I used to live, a bit of a surprise as there’s a lot less trees around here.  Thanks to Edinburgh Hawkwatch for their page on – Tawny Owl – Edinburgh for a little more detail about Tawny Owls in the area.  Whilst watching the Rugby I noticed a very large bird arrive on the horizon I thought that’s too big to be a gull it has to be something else, it continued to fly straight towards me and it was a heron, another first for the year, here’s the garden bird list I’ve seen today:

  1. Blackbird x 3
  2. Blue Tit x 2
  3. Chaffinch x 4
  4. Coal Tit x 1
  5. Grey Heron x 1 – fly over
  6. House Sparrow x 6
  7. Tawny Owl x 1 – heard only
  8. Woodpigeon x 1
